Cat Enrichment 101: How to Keep Your Cats Active & Happy

Oftentimes we find our beloved cats calmly napping and laying out in the sun. However, cats are also natural hunters and explorers, and it's essential to provide them with an environment that stimulates their natural instincts. Here are some recommendations and practical tips for cat enrichment that will keep your feline friend mentally and physically engaged.

  1. Interactive Play:
Daily play sessions are imperative for keeping your cat active and mentally stimulated. In their natural environment, cats are often hunting and taking in all the stimulation from nature that keeps their senses sharp. Introduce a variety of toys and games that cater to your cat's hunting and pouncing instincts. Daily play sessions are also a great time to bond with your cat!

  2. DIY Puzzle Feeders:
You can make puzzle feeders from everyday home objects. Puzzle feeders offer additional mental stimulation for your pet during mealtime. DIY puzzle feeders can be made at home from treats rolled up in an old towel, old cardboard boxes turned into mazes, toilet paper rolls, and more! In addition to mental stimulation, puzzle feeders can promote slower eating for pets who are fast eaters.

  3. Vertical Spaces:
Vertical spaces are important for cats to be able to jump and stretch their legs. Cat trees are a good way for cats to be able to jump and explore their surroundings from a higher vantage point. Other ideas could be custom wall shelves or window perches to allow your cat to observe their surroundings from new perspectives.

  4. Window Watching:
Observing other animals is a great source of entertainment and stimulation for your cat! Provide easy access to windows for your cat to watch birds, squirrels, and passing scenery. You might even hear your cat chattering away! Consider adding bird feeders or installing cat shelves near windows to enhance their viewing experience.

  5. Hide and Seek:
Create sufficient hiding spots and cozy retreats within your home for your cat. Your cat will have fun surprising you at unexpected moments. Additionally, having private spaces where your cat can retreat to when feeling overwhelmed can create a calming effect for them.

Cat enrichment is an essential aspect of responsible cat ownership. By incorporating these ideas into the daily routine of you and your cat, you'll ensure that your cat leads a happy, healthy, and enriched life.
